ECMO/Mechanical Circulatory Support
The Massachusetts General Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center both perform state-of-the-art veno-venous (VV) and veno-arterial (VA) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and other forms of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) in various critical care units. In collaboration with the MGH Corrigan Minehan Heart Center ICU and BIDMC Cardiac Critical Care Unit, fellows can pursue focused clinical training on the critical care management of patients on ECMO and MCS, including those post-heart or lung transplant and other cardiac surgeries. Fellows join and participate in candidacy decision-making processes and the daily management and troubleshooting of patients on devices. This training often integrates achieving board certification in critical care echocardiography and related research, while tailored to the individual goals and needs of the fellow.
